Shorts Manufacturing: Denim, Twill, Chino and Knit Bases

We manufacture shorts in Bangladesh to buyer specification: cut-off denim, tailored chino and jersey across inseam lengths, with drawcord, belt-loop and wash options. Fabric families, inseams, wash routes, minimums and timing are stated below.

Shorts are a compressed category: a short cycle, a single retail season, and four distinct fabric families that each run through a different production route. Denim shorts follow the jeans process, chino shorts follow the trouser process, and jersey shorts follow the knitwear process. We manufacture all four families to buyer specification, with inseam, waist construction and wash locked at sampling.

Which types of shorts are manufactured in Bangladesh?

We produce denim shorts, chino and twill shorts, cargo shorts, and knitted jersey and fleece shorts. Woven shorts carry a fly front and belt loops; knitted shorts use an elasticated or drawcord waist and are cut from the same bases as t-shirts and sweatshirts.

The family decides the customs heading as well as the line. Woven cotton shorts fall under HS 6203.42 alongside cotton trousers, and knitted cotton shorts under 6103.42, so a mixed range runs as two classification lines on the invoice.

Buyers who need shorts inside the current season, without a production cycle, start with available shorts lots, where each listing states fabric, inseam, size ratio and quantity.

What inseam lengths and fits are standard for men's shorts?

Men's shorts are graded by inseam, commonly 5, 7, 9 and 11 inches — about 13, 18, 23 and 28 centimetres. The 7 and 9 inch lengths cover mainstream retail; 5 inches suits athletic styles; 11 inches suits cargo and utility shorts.

Inseam is measured from the crotch seam to the hem along the inside leg. Two grading methods exist, and the specification states which applies: a fixed inseam, where every waist size carries the same length, or a graded inseam, where length steps up with waist size. Fixed inseam is the norm for retail labelled by length, such as "7-inch short"; graded inseam keeps proportion on extended size ranges.

The tailored chino short is built from a trouser block cut at a stated inseam, with the leg opening reshaped so the hem does not flare. That shared foundation means a buyer already running twill and chino trousers with us carries the fitted waist, rise and seat directly into the short, and only the leg needs a new fit round.

Leg opening width is the second measurement buyers overlook. A 9-inch short with a wide opening reads as relaxed; the same inseam with a narrow opening reads as slim. State both, with tolerances, on the measurement chart.

Which wash routes fix colour on shorts before shipment?

Garment dyeing, pigment dyeing, enzyme washing and stone washing are the four main routes. Each sets colour and handfeel after sewing, removes residual shrinkage, and is approved on a wash sample, because wash results vary between batches more than piece-dyed fabric does.

  • Garment dyeing — the sewn short is dyed as a finished garment; soft hand, slight seam puckering, wider shade tolerance.
  • Pigment dyeing — pigment bonds to the fibre surface and fades with wear into a worn-in look.
  • Enzyme washing — cellulase enzymes remove surface fibre and soften the fabric with low shade variation.
  • Stone washing — pumice abrades the surface for contrast on denim; strongest batch-to-batch variation.

Every washed route shrinks the garment, so the pattern is cut oversize by the shrinkage percentage measured on the wash test. Skipping that test and cutting to finished measurements produces a short one size small. Wash types compares the routes in detail.

Cut-off denim shorts carry one extra control point. The frayed hem forms during washing, and its length is fixed by a stay-stitch line sewn above the cut edge; without that line, fray length varies piece to piece and keeps travelling after the customer's first wash. Denim shorts run 9 to 12 ounces — lighter than jeans — and denim ounce weights explains how finished weight behaves through washing.

What trims and closures do shorts use?

Woven shorts use a zip or button fly, a waistband button or metal shank, belt loops and pocketing fabric. Knitted shorts use covered elastic, a drawcord through metal or stitched eyelets, and optional zip pockets. Each trim is approved on the fit or pre-production sample.

Pocketing is the hidden specification. A 65/35 polyester-cotton pocketing resists wear and holds shape through washing; an all-cotton pocketing suits garment-dyed styles, where the pocket bag takes the same dye as the shell. Polyester thread does not take reactive dye, so garment-dyed shorts sewn in polyester thread show pale stitching — a deliberate contrast on some styles and a defect on others.

Drawcords are specified by profile (flat or round), width, material and tip — metal aglets, silicone tips or knotted ends. Metal shanks, rivets and eyelets in skin contact must meet nickel-release limits in the EU, and the trim supplier's test report travels with the order.

What does a shorts order need — minimums and timing?

Minimums are confirmed per style in the quotation. The binding constraints are the fabric dye lot for piece-dyed woven bases and the wash batch for garment-dyed styles. Shorts sell in spring and summer, so delivery dates follow the retail floor-set, not the factory calendar.

Northern Hemisphere spring-summer floor-sets run from February to May, which places shipment between December and March and development in the preceding autumn. Gulf and South Asian markets sell shorts across a longer warm season, which flattens the peak. Minimum order quantities and lead times set out how the two constraints combine.

Requesting a shorts quotation

Send a reference garment or a specification stating family, fabric and weight, inseam and leg opening, waist construction, wash route and destination market. We quote unit price, minimum quantity and lead time against it, and state wash-related shrinkage allowances in the quotation so the finished measurements are agreed in writing.

Buyers building a summer range across the four families send the full style list in one enquiry, so shared fabrics, trims and wash batches are consolidated.
